Cairns Photographic Exhibition - Rutherford International

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

On Friday night Bob and I attended the official opening of Steve Rutherford’s brand new photographic exhibition “The Colourful Icons of Cairns”. The exhibition is part of the Cairns Festival celebrations and events. Steve is a multi award winning international landscape photographer who lives at Palm Cove.

What a great thing it is for Cairns to have this talented international photographer based and exhibiting here in the Far North.

Cairns Mayor, Val Schier formally opened the exhibition, while the event was MC’ed by International Business Author Andrew Griffiths.

Steve and Tanya are friends of Bob and I, 4 years ago I photographed their wedding! Steve and Tanya also acted as our support crew recently on our microlight trip to the tip of Cape York.

“The Colourful Icons of Cairns” is a series of 12 images, the theme is “People, places and culture from the Far North, showcased in a different and intriguing light”. There is also a large number of Steve’s award winning images on display in various forms, including huge wall paper pieces and glowing panels…you will have to visit the exhibition to see this amazing style of displaying images!

Steve and Tanya have been working furiously since they returned from Cape York, only 8 weeks before the exhibition opening! They have done an amazing job to get it all finished and work through all the bits and pieces which inevitably arise when organising such an event in a short period of time!

As part of the exhibition, Steve will be holding free workshops and information sessions about his work. Please visit the exhibition to find out details of these workshops. If you are interested in photography and want to learn more, then Steve is your man!

Congratulations to Steve and Tanya on the launch of this fabulous Photographic Exhibition, well done, you have good reason to be very proud of your efforts!

Below are a couple of images from Friday night. Please go and visit “The Colurful Icons of Cairns”, it is well worth it! You will find the exhibition at Shop 932 - The Pier, right at the front door!

Our mountain bike holiday in New Zealand

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Bob and I returned from our mountain biking holiday in New Zealand on Monday night.

We had a great time! We managed to ride everyday we were away. We took our own bikes with us, which was great once we arrived and were actually riding them. Excess baggage can be a problem when carrying bikes though, so no shopping allowed!

We rode the Central Otago Railtrail for 4 days. We had perfect weather for the entire ride with cool mornings, 1 or 2 degrees, and warming up to about 20 degrees by the afternoon. The scenery was absolutely stunning and we could not resist taking so many photos of the snow capped mountains as they stood out against the clear blue skies.

Each night our bags were waiting for us, transfered to our accomodation by Trail Journeys. They did a terrrific job! Every place we stayed was spot on, with a VERY comfortable bed, a luxuriously hot bath and a delicious meal. Exactly what you need after riding for around 50 kms each day.

Along the trail we passed about 22 million sheep! It was lambing season so each sheep had twin lambs, a very cute sight….two sets of tiny woolly ears curiously peaking up at you as we ride by!

There were heaps of bridges to traverse over deep craggy gorges and a few dark tunnels to walk through.

About 10,000 people a year ride the Rail Trail, the busiest time being Easter. So for us it was a great time to do the trail as we had it mostly to ourselves!  We arrived on Day 4 at Middlemarch to the fanfare of a Steam Train and all the excitement that goes along with that! A Scottish Pipe band, market stalls and heaps of people! Bit of a shock after riding 167kms through the country side and talking mostly to the sheep!

After the Rail Trail, we went to Queenstown, where we had rain and snow! The next day the weather was yet again glorious and perfect for another bike ride. We found a track out to Jack’s Point and spent the morning riding and taking photos.

I have been asked what was the best bit about our trip and I would have to say the time on the rail Trail when we rode our bikes each day, exploring the country side up close and personal! We have all had holidays where you spent quite a bit of time driving and sitting int he car as the scenery goes whizzing past. Taking the time to slow down and enjoy it was really worth the effort!

After a very hectic wedding season Bob and I are off on a mountain biking holiday in New Zealand!

You will find everything you need to know about our photography packages for 2010 on the website. We also just added some new albums and photos to the galleries.

I will have my very own “Office Guru” Dee, answering emails for me while we are away. So, if you would like to check availability please send Dee an email.

We will back on the 1st November, all refreshed and ready to tackle the “silly” season!

Happy wedding planning and Ciao for now!

How about this weather?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

The weather here in Far North QLD has been magnificent these past few weeks. Bob and I couldn’t resist the urge to get up in our little plane and go flying on Sunday morning.

We departed Atherton at 7am and headed to Port Douglas. The Coast always beckons on such a glorious day!

As you can see from the images below, the view did not disappoint!

I landed at Port Douglas for Bob to take over and then we continued North along the Coast over Wonga Beach and then turned west to fly over the Daintree River, doing a bit of croc spotting along the way and then up the Daintree Valley as far as we could go before hitting the thermals and tiger country!

RSPCA Millions Paws Walk

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Sunday morning saw Bob and I up early to take our dog Chelsea to the RSPCA Millions Paws Walk on the Esplanade in Cairns. There were hundreds of people, dogs, a couple of pets rats and even two ponies!

Event manager Lyn Waters said about 800 people and a similar number of animals joined this year’s walk, which started near Muddies Playground and headed north along The Esplanade.

The RSPCA hopes to have raised more than $11500 from the event.

There were big dogs and little dogs, there were dogs wearing superman outfits and dogs dressed as fairies. There was a black poodle named ‘Naomi’ and lots of border collies named Jess! There was a little black Labrador puppy with angel wings and a grumpy old basset hound!

We met out friends Mike and Fiz and their energetic Coolie dog, Milly, for the stroll to the northern end of the esplanade and back. Thanks to Mike for the photo of Chelsea and I below!
